Computers troubleshooting

Computer has no sound

Check whether every app is silent or just one. Start at low volume so an unexpectedly restored connection does not play loudly.

Windows 11 and macOS • sound outputUpdated

Before you start

Know whether you want built-in speakers, headphones, or monitor audio. Not every monitor contains speakers.

Try these steps in order

Test after each step. If the problem is resolved, you can stop.

  1. Unmute both controls

Check the system volume and the app or browser player’s volume. Test another audio source.

  2. Select an output on Windows

Open Settings → System → Sound and choose the intended device under Output. Check Volume mixer for an individually muted app.

  3. Select an output on Mac

Open Apple menu → System Settings → Sound → Output. Choose the intended speakers and check Mute and output volume.

  4. Check connected accessories

Disconnect unused headphones or displays that may receive the sound. Reconnect the accessory you actually want to use.

  5. Retest after restarting

Reopen the app, then restart the computer if needed. On Windows, the Get Help audio troubleshooter can guide further checks.

What your result may mean

No output device appears
Use the computer maker’s support for the exact model.

Still not working?

If no audio source works after these checks, use official support. Note which outputs and apps you tested.
