Computers troubleshooting

Windows laptop is running slow

Identify what is slow: startup, one app, or the entire computer. A slow webpage can be an internet problem rather than a slow PC.

Before you start

Save your work. On a school or work computer, ask IT before changing managed settings.

Try these steps in order

Test after each step. If the problem is resolved, you can stop.

  1. Restart with fewer apps

Choose Start → Power → Restart. Open only the app you need and compare its behavior.

  2. Look for a resource-heavy app

Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc. In Task Manager, check CPU and Memory. Close recognized unused apps normally after saving; leave unfamiliar processes alone.

  3. Review storage carefully

Open Settings → System → Storage. Review temporary-file categories before deletion, especially Downloads and the Recycle Bin.

  4. Reduce optional startup apps

In Task Manager → Startup apps, disable only nonessential apps you recognize. This changes automatic startup, not installation.

  5. Check updates and protection

Use Settings → Windows Update. Run a scan through Windows Security. Keep power connected and allow requested restarts.

What your result may mean

Only one app remains slow
Check that app’s requirements and support.
Only websites are slow
Try the internet-speed guide.
The whole PC stays slow
Record when it happens and what Task Manager shows.

Still not working?

For repeated crashes, overheating, or suspected drive failure, stop troubleshooting and back up accessible important files. Ask IT or a repair professional for diagnostics.
